Report n°3698 of the 02-03-2010
Klyuchevskoy, Russie, 4835 m
The very intense thermic anomaly detected each day by the MODVOLC seems to indicate that the activity of Klyuchevskoy currently does not weaken. The orange level alert was maintained on the volcano in the preceding bulletin of the KVERT (dated February 25). Source: MODVOLC.
Report n°3697 of the 02-03-2010
Semeru, Indonésie, 3676 m
The VSI put on line a bulletin indicating the growth of Semeru activity once more.Since January the volcanologists observe incandescent projections, expelled of Jonggring Seloko (name of the active crater of Semeru). The activity does not seem very intense yet and the alarm level remains to 2 (" Waspada"). Source: VSI.
Report n°3696 of the 02-03-2010
Mayon, Philippines, 2462 m
PHIVOLCS decided today to lower the alarm level of Mayon to 1, the lowest level. It's the consequence of the return of a stable and normal seismicity. Deformation measured during the eruptive crisis (inflation) has reversed and a deflation is in hand. Source: PHIVOLCS.
Report n°3695 of the 01-03-2010
Karymsky, Russie, 1486 m
Last February 25, KVERT (which continued its activity during February) decreased the alarm level of Karymsky, from orange to yellow. This decision is the result of a great decrease of its activity, marked by an absence of ashes plumes and a fall of the thermic anomaly intensity, presents almost permanently on the volcano. Source: KVERT.
Report n°3694 of the 28-02-2010
Villarrica, Chili, 2847 m
Since the powerful seism (magnitude of 8,5 on Richter scale according to the sources) which touched Chile yesterday, no more information arrive on the site of the POVI. It is extremely probable that the material was damaged during the jolts having touched the country. Nevertheless, for the moment, it does not seem that the seism had consequences on the immediate volcanic activity, only data transmitted by the Chilean government concerning, and one can include it, the earthquake and its consequences (major damage, tsunami, etc). To follow. Source: ONEMI.
Report n°3693 of the 28-02-2010
Sakurajima, Japon, 1117 m
The explosions are continuous on Sakurajima. The VAAC of Tokyo indeed announced a battery of brittle plumes nearly 1300 meters above the top of the volcanothese last hours. Ashes are pushed towards the east and the south-east of the volcano according to the winds of the moment. Source: VAAC Tokyo.
Report n°3692 of the 26-02-2010
Karkar, Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée, 1839 m
The VAAC of Darwin emitted a bulletin indicating the presence of a small ashes plume coming from Karkar. The aviation alarm level is orange. However, this information requires confirmation because similar information had been produced at the end of November 2009 and were false. To follow. Source: VAAC of Darwin.
Report n°3691 of the 25-02-2010
Poas, Costa-Rica, 2708 m
A phreatic eruption occured on February 23 in Poàs, at 11:33 a.m.(local time). Light ashes falls followed on the south-western and south-eastern sides. No tourists evacuation was decided. The seismicity showed only the signal related to the explosion, no sign of detectable precursory signals by the apparatuses. Source: OVSICORI-UNA.
Report n°3690 of the 25-02-2010
Soufriere Hills, Royaume-Uni, 915 m
Ashes emissions are still in process on soufriere hills with a lower rhythm and less less intensity than before the event of February 11. In any case, it's what suggests the decrease of the alarm level to 3, decided by the MVO yesterday. NASA put on line a couple of spectacular pictures on which can be seen the evolution of the deposits between 2007 and 2010, and especially the extension of the deposits of February 11 (NASA.http://earthobservatory.nasa.gov/NaturalHazards/view.php?id=42792). Report n°3689 of the 24-02-2010
Shiveluch, Russie, 3283 m
The MODVOLC is perceiving an intense thermic anomaly on the level of the active dome. It thus seems still in growth. Source: MODVOLC.
Report n°3688 of the 23-02-2010
Tungurahua, Equateur, 5023 m
The activity remains high in Tunguraua. The explosions which occurred yesterday projected blocks and bombs on the external slopes of the volcano. On the northern side these blocks gave birth, during their descent, to weak secondary pyroclastic flow which is propagated at a distance of about 300m. Source: IGEPN.
Report n°3687 of the 23-02-2010
Kilauea, Etats-Unis, 1222 m
If you want to see a lava lake on line then do not hesitate to get a glimps on the webcam overlook of Halema' uma' U : http://volcanoes.usgs.gov/hvo/cams/HMcam/". Currently the activity of the small summit lava lake is very intense. Its level varies much and, in the last report from yesterday the American volcanologists speak about small episodes of lava fountains. To be short, a good reason to pass a little time in front of its computer. Source: HVO.
Report n°3686 of the 23-02-2010
Ol Doinyo Lengaï, Tanzanie, 2890 m
The eruptive activity is still present on Ol Doinyo Lengaï. Still localised at the feet of the new summit, and thus inaccessible cone for the moment, it is emitting carbonatites. No chemical analysis was made to specify the composition of this rock, but its change of color, passing from the black to the clear gray, does not leave any doubt as for its nature. The reports provided to Fred Belton by the various visitors who followed one another on the solid mass since January 2010 currently indicate a rather low actity. Source: Fred Belton.
Report n°3685 of the 22-02-2010
Tungurahua, Equateur, 5023 m
The eruptive activity remains high in Tungurahua. The volcanologists observe an ashes plume dense and fed permanently, high of 3000m. The ashes falls, leave for the moment, a respite with the close populations. Source: MODVOLC.
Report n°3684 of the 21-02-2010
Tinakula, Ils Salomon, 851 m
Tinakula, the " twin of Stromboli" , seems to be the seat of an eruptive activity in process. The MODVOLC indeed detected yesterday two thermic anomalies localised in the summit zone. Source: MODVOLC.
Report n°3683 of the 20-02-2010
Soufriere Hills, Royaume-Uni, 915 m
Since the partial collapse of the dome last February 11, which had been followed by strong ashes falls to Guadeloupe, activity remains weak on Soufriere Hills. The climatic conditions prevented during several days the volcanologists to observe the new morphology of the dome. A break made possible to note the presence of a high setback of 300m, corresponding to the height of the piece which has detached (probably in several times) on February 11. In addition the top of the dome is opened by a crater of 300 m in diameter. The deposit of February 11 remains at a temperature of 470 °C, and the volcanologists estimate that these very high temperatures will remain during several months. Finally the deposit pushed back, in less of one hour, the 650 meters coast line. Source: MVO.
Report n°3682 of the 19-02-2010
Klyuchevskoy, Russie, 4835 m
The intensity of the summit thermic anomaly detected yesterday by the MODVOLC let little place to the doubt: eruptive activity is going on, on Klyuchevskoy. The KVERT, which seems to function for the moment, indicates in its yesterday bulletin that Strombolian activity is indeed present at the top and precise that the lava flow of the north-western slope is still present too. Here some pictures took on February 12 "http://www.kscnet.ru/ivs/kvert/current/klch/index.html". Sources: KVERT; MODVOLC.
Report n°3681 of the 19-02-2010
Suwanose-jima, Japon, 799 m
The VAAC is emitting bulletins about Suwanose-jima. It is still in activity, with few documents. Source: VAAC of Tokyo.
Report n°3680 of the 18-02-2010
Talang, Indonésie, 2597 m
The VSI decreased the alarm level yesterday of Talang, to the level 2. It had passed in alarm 3 in August 2009 following an increase in its seismicity. Since, no news had been given about the evolution of the situation. Currently, the volcano produces a rather weak degasification, forming a plume from 20 to 100 m height. Source: VSI.
Report n°3679 of the 17-02-2010
Fuego, Guatemala, 3763 m
Strombolian activity is animating the top of Fuego. Projections of bombs and blocks reach a 75 m height: it is thus a rather low activity. Source: INSIVUMEH.
Report n°3678 of the 16-02-2010
Pacaya, Guatemala, 2552 m
Effusive activity is maintained. Lavaflows, which recover the south-eastern side, have an unstable face which breaks in pieces on a rather strong slope. The blocks which are detached currently roll till vegetalized zones, causing small fires. Source: INSIVUMEH.
Report n°3677 of the 16-02-2010
Reventador, Equateur, 3562 m
The explosive activity recently seems to have ceased in Reventador. Indeed, it's the first time since the beginning of its eruption, started at the end of September 2009, that the IGEPN volcanologists do not mention a seismicity only related to fluids movements. The jolts related to the explosions are thus absent from recordings. Source: IGEPN.
Report n°3676 of the 15-02-2010
Soufriere Hills, Royaume-Uni, 915 m
The MVO made an update relating to the event of last February 11. First, following this event, the seismicity knew a strong fall and the volcanologists are currently recording only signals related to some collapses of the carapace of the dome. With regard to the power of the pyroclastic flow of February 11, the village of Harris, for a long time abandoned, was strongly impacted and only remain now the foundations of the majority of the abandoned houses. The flow, after having passed the hill of Harris (more than 100 m height) came impacted the southern slope of the following hill (Fairy Walks) and was channeled by Far River which passes between the two hills. Following this corridor, the flow then passed on the old airport (devastated in 1997) before to arrive on the Atlantic Ocean, traversing several hundred meters on its surface before to stop. One week before, this event would have made several victims, a group of German photographers who, to make their stereotypes, were posted in full closed area, in the village of Harris. Source: MVO.
Report n°3675 of the 15-02-2010
Bezymianny, Russie, 2882 m
The KVERT seems to have the possibilities to continue its mission till February 11, dates to which they emitted a bulletin. It is indicated that the alarm level of Bezymianny was decreased, passing from orange to yellow. The overflowing of lava continues on the dome and gives rise to a new lavaflows. It seems moreover than an explosive phase moderate in intensity occurred between the 05 and on February 6. The problem with the monitoring of this volcano is that its seismicity is masked by the one, very important, of the eruption of the close volcano: Klyuchevskoy (only 10 km hardly separate the top from the two volcanos…). Source: KVERT.
Report n°3674 of the 14-02-2010
Ulawun, Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée, 2334 m
The VAAC of Darwin indicates that an ashes plume coming from Ulawun was located on satellite pictures. The aviation alarm level is orange in the zone of the volcano. Source: VAAC of Darwin.
Report n°3673 of the 14-02-2010
Karangetang, Indonésie, 1784 m
Following a decrease, started in January 2010, of the eruptive activity and of the associated seismicity, the volcanologists of the VSI decided yesterday to decrease the alarm level of Karangetang, from 3 to 2. The volcano currently produce no more than a plume of degasification, sometimes intersected with the ejection of some projections. Source: VSI.
Report n°3672 of the 13-02-2010
Tungurahua, Equateur, 5023 m
The activity is still very intense. Some plumes are now reaching 4000 m height and the sound of the explosions is sometimes described like "violent" by the inhabitants neighbourhood. Projections (blocks/bombs) roll at a distance which can reach 2000 M. In the course of yesterday, a whole of blocks rolling on the slope even create a secondary pyroclastic flow. Source: IGEPN.
Report n°3671 of the 12-02-2010
Reventador, Equateur, 3562 m
Seismic signals associated with an explosive activity are still recorded in Reventador. But the bad weather still prevents direct observations. Source: IGEPN.
Report n°3670 of the 12-02-2010
Tungurahua, Equateur, 5023 m
The eruptive activity is still quite intense in Tungurahua. The ashes plumes reach regularly 3000 m height. The ashes falls are still present in the villages neighbourhood. Explosive activity, of Strombolian style, projects blocks and bombs out of the crater. These ones roll sometimes on more than 1500 m of distance before to stop on the slope. Source: IGEPN.
Report n°3669 of the 12-02-2010
Llaima, Chili, 3125 m
The Chiliens volcanologists decided to pass Llaima in yellow alarm /3 (traditional scale of color is divided into 3 in the Chilean alarm system). The decision was made following the description, starting from analyzes seismicity, of a very active hydrothermal system. The volcanologists estimate that the stopper currently blocking the top could lead this hydrothermal system to an overpressure likely to be released brutally. If, for the moment, it's only an assumption, certainly founded on concrete indices, prudence is of rigour, what explain the changing in the level of alarm. The volcanologists are supervising the volcano very close. Source: SERNAGEOMIN.
Report n°3668 of the 12-02-2010
Soufriere Hills, Royaume-Uni, 915 m
A new phase of collapse of the dome has occured yesterday. 55 minutes long, it began towards 12:35 to finish with 13:30 (local times). The pyroclastic flows, bulky, borrowed Tyer' S Ghaut and gullies of the North-East. North-Eastwards, lavaflows (very important) reached the sea while passing on the old airport (the MODVOLC recorded an important thermic anomaly related to the very high temperature of the deposit corresponding to the event) while by Tyer' S ghaut the flows are descended in Belham River to Cork Hills. The access to Belham River, fortunately, had been maintained closed to all people. The plume "Co-ignimbritic" (cf glossary) reached an altitude of 15 km! The ashes falls reached the Guadeloupe, where the cars were covered with ashes. The airport was closed as well as the schools (decision of the prefect to prevent the ocular and pulmonary irritations risks related to the ashes falls). The air traffic between Antigua and Montserrat was suspended and 20 people of the island were evacuated from danger zones. It seems that this intense phase modified in an important way morphology of the active dome. Sources: MVO; Caribworldnews, AFP, MODVOLC.
Report n°3667 of the 11-02-2010
Sakurajima, Japon, 1117 m
The activity of Sakurajima is really very intense. In addition to the many daily bulletins emitted by the VAAC of Tokyo, announcing the presence of ashes plumes knew an intense episode of fountain of lava, exceeding the 1000 m height. Volcanism Blog announces the presence of a video of this event : "http://www.kago-net.com/index.php?itemid=127". a word: spectacular. Good visionnage! Report n°3665 of the 11-02-2010
Bagana, Papouasie Nouvelle-Guinée, 1750 m
A bulletin of the VAAC of Darwin and the presence of a thermic anomaly with the MODVOLC, indicate that Bagana is still in eruption. Sources: VAAC of Darwin; MODVOLC.
Report n°3664 of the 11-02-2010
Soufriere Hills, Royaume-Uni, 915 m
Since yesterday, the eruptive activity, dominant on the west side of the dome before, passed on the northern slope where the pyroclastic flows are going on. The Zone B of the chart of risks (zone of Islands Bay, Belham, Waterworks, Old Towne and the low part of Happy Hill) is completely closed by the authorities. Indeed, in this eruptive configuration, the Belham River (where people are regularly working with aggregate extraction) can channel and bring very low the volcanic clouds. The zone is thus very exposed with the risk. Source: MVO.
Report n°3663 of the 10-02-2010
Dukono, Indonésie, 1185 m
The volcano is still currently the seat of an eruptive activity. The presence of small ashes plumes and regularly brought back by the VAAC of Darwin. The fly alarm level is still orange. Source: VAAC of Darwin.
Report n°3662 of the 09-02-2010
Pacaya, Guatemala, 2552 m
The activity remains of the same style on Pacaya, but has moved on the north-eastern side. lavaflows are emitted from a collapse zone formed last week end(observed the first time last Saturday). The bad weather prevents the observers from giving details on the current activity. Source: INSIVUMEH.
Report n°3661 of the 08-02-2010
Kilauea, Etats-Unis, 1222 m
The activity remains overall the same and rather stable. In the Pit Crater of Halema' uma' U, the lava now occupies two vents in which the level varies throughout the day. From time to time, the level becomes sufficiently high so that the lava overflows on the platform in which these two vents are open. On the rift-zone, activity remains the same one with a degasification of the ascending magma via Pu' uO' O, but the magma in its even is still leaving two kilometers in against-low, on the open crack in 2007. Lavaflows are currently visible on the coastal platform. Source: HVO.
